The third leg of the FIDE Grand Prix is over, and Alexander Grischuk has taken a significant step toward trying to become the challenger for next year’s World Chess Championship match.
The most of the Grand Prix Series has already passed but there is still one stage of Grand Prix before grandmaster from Russia, or anyone else, will earn the right to play for the title.
Grischuk won 24,000 euros and propelled him to 1 place in the FIDE Grand Prix Series. Next stage will take place in Jerusalem. At the end of the four Grand Prix tournaments in December, the best two players will qualify to next year’s Candidates tournament. The winner of that event will challenge incumbent Champion Magnus Carlsen in the 2020 World Championship match to be held in November.
FIDE general director Emil Sutovsky attended the Closing Ceremony that took place on November 17. The Chief Arbiter Jens Wolter, president
