Mercedes-Benz Russia has become the official auto partner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, which will be held in Yekaterinburg from March 16 to April 4. Mercedes-Benz and World Chess defined a global task of developing chess culture in Russia and promoting one of the most intellectual sports.
The Candidates Tournament is one of the key competitions in the chess world. The top eight Grandmasters will compete for the chance to challenge the current world chess champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway. Among them American player Fabiano Caruana, representatives of China Ding Liren and Wang Hao, French Grandmaster Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and participant from the Netherlands Anish Giri.
Three players come from Russia: Alexander Grischuk and Ian Nepomniachtchi qualified as the winner and runner-up of the FIDE Grand Prix 2019 organized by World Chess and Kirill Alekseenko, who received a “wild card” from the organizers. The prize fund of the tournament is €500,000.
Candidates Tournament Director Albert Stepanyan said:
“We are glad that Mercedes-Benz Russia has decided to include chess in its sponsorship portfolio and become a partner of the Candidates Tournament 2020. The history of the brand is quite similar to the game of chess: strategic vision, innovative approach and beauty. We hope that the partnership with the Candidates Tournament is only the beginning of the long-term cooperation of Mercedes-Benz with the world of chess”.
Chess had become one of the world’s most popular spectator sports: more than 12 million viewers watched Magnus Carlsen defeat Fabiano Caruana at the 2018 World Chess Championship. Both young stars reflect the sport’s growing popularity and global significance: 27-year-old Carlsen was one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World. The tournament line-up of the Candidates’ also proves that chess is a game of youngsters: more and more young people are playing chess at a professional level. Mercedes-Benz will continue to promote chess.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLS will be exhibited at the venue of the tournament from March 16 to April 4. This choice is not accidental: the new GLS, being a bright representative of the family of Mercedes-Benz cars, fully reflects the spirit of chess with its intelligence, perfection of form and desire to win.
“The new Mercedes-Benz GLS is the biggest and most luxurious of the SUV Mercedes-Benz cars and offers everything: more space, more comfort, more luxury. GLS is the S-Class among the cars of SUV premium segment”, – noted Maria Morozova, Director of the Department of Car Sales of Mercedes-Benz Russia.
